Day 11 | Hannah's Prayer of Lament

THE LORD MAKES POOR AND MAKES RICH; HE BRINGS LOW AND HE EXALTS. HE RAISES UP THE POOR FROM THE DUST; HE LIFTS THE NEEDY FROM THE ASH HEAP TO MAKE THEM SIT WITH PRINCES AND INHERIT A SEAT OF HONOR. FOR THE PILLARS OF THE EARTH ARE THE LORD’S, AND ON THEM HE HAS SET THE WORLD. 1 SAMUEL 2:7-8

Sovereign God, Creator and sustainer of all things. You are the one who has placed the stars in the sky and holds the world in His hand. You alone balance everything in your scales and determine the end from the beginning. You are Alpha and Omega, the all-knowing, all-present, and all powerful One. Your ways are higher than my ways. Your thoughts are above mine. You are the God who stands outside of time and reaches into time to determine the number of our days. You know when I lie down and when I get up. Even before I was fashioned in my mother’s womb, you thought of me. Your divine stamp has been placed in my heart. Nothing happens to me unless you allow it. When Hannah cried out to you for a child, she bowed down as a beggar from the ash heap. I too know that you raise the poor from the dust and set them among princes, and you make them inherit the throne of glory.

Throughout my life I have lost loved ones. (Take a moment and speak their name aloud). O Lord, I offer this prayer of lament to You. The weight of my grief is crushing me. The measure of my loss seems to be without end. Please reveal yourself as the God of all comfort and the Father of all compassion who bears my suffering and pain with me. Don’t leave me or forsake me. Amen.
